Visions of What?
I was sitting on the settee, with an old friend. It was dark in the room and we were drinking beer. I felt an overwhelming frightened urge to curl into a ball and scream. I saw a wispy white ankle appear in the open doorway, followed by the wispy glow of the childlike ballerina as she entered the room. I was scared, it was a ghost and she was dancing. Looking at me with evil black eyes, she beckoned to me with an aged index finger. I stood and took her hand – I felt her holding my hand – and I led her to the corner of the room. I let go and returned to my friend. I turned around and she was heading back towards me looking angry – evil and angry. I had led her to the wrong part of the room – this time she snatched my hand and yanked me up. As she pulled, I woke with a start screaming out of fear.
I was sweating and scared – I stared at my bedroom door for ages, and could not move out of fright. I needed reassurance it was just a dream. I ended up turning my light on for 10 minutes until I was calm again. I drank water, I repeated to myself over and over “It was just a dream”. Trouble is it was so real, as I woke, I could still feel the hand of that ghost in my own – and 10 minutes later? It was still there! I turned the light off – how could a 42 year old be so spooked by a dream, and what did it mean?
Definition: A dream – a succession of images, thoughts, or emotions passing through the mind during sleep.
That’s what the dictionary says, but where do the images come from, what do they mean, and why does it happen? According to encyclopedias, dreams have never been fully understood. There are, however many dream dictionaries available that profess to understand the images and define what you have seen. I own a few of these – trouble is they all give different meanings!!! So, will we ever understand our dreams? I do hope so, as I have them frequently, they are always colourful and often strange and at times, on waking, I would love to know what is going on in my head!!!
What did the dream that started this article mean – I will stick with the same source of definition to avoid confusion! Ghosts typically represent your fears – they can also represent a need to change the way you think and behave in order to move on in life. Overall, to see a ghost represents a feeling that one is experiencing a lack of control in ones life. Couple this with the image of a ballerina – the most graceful and controlled of dancers, I guess we could say that she was leading me to a solution. Given that she had evil eyes though, maybe she was leading me the wrong way. Or maybe it was telling me that my dancing days are well and truly over!!!
We will never know the true meaning of our dreams, they come from a combination of our thoughts during the day and what has been stored in our sub conscious. These then combine as we sleep to produce these visions and, I guess, make sense of what troubles us or our goals in life – our dreams and aspirations. They recommend that it pays to keep a pen and paper by your bed so that you can write down your dreams, I think this is a good idea – several of my dreams have inspired short stories in the past.
So if you can’t make sense of them, make stories of them – you never know, telling the story the dream has inspired, may lead you to the dream’s meaning.
With best wishes for a good nights sleep without disturbing visions
