Why Do Psychopaths Exist?
Since psychopaths feel neither guilt nor shame, it’s really not possible to appeal to their better nature. They don’t have one! As the old saying goes; ‘You can’t turn a lion into a vegetarian by throwing vegetables at him.’ So the question throughout this article is; Why do psychopaths exist?
Never expect them to feel genuinely sorry for you. They’ll go through the motions, and very convincingly too, but the mask comes off when it suits them.
If you really have suspicions about someone you know having psychopathic tendencies, or someone even on the periphery of your circle of friends, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to jot down any evidence you see of manipulative behaviour, either with you, or anyone else.
Do your best to avoid being alone with them, most especially if you’re of the opposite sex. They can leave a wake of destruction behind them, in the form of broken hearts, desperation and empty wallets. I emphasize that romantic relationships are really fraught with peril, not only to your emotional well-being, but your physical health, too.
If they’re are such a scourge of mankind, why do psychopaths exist? At first sight, they don’t do any good for their fellow man. Indeed, quite the reverse. But then, why do we have people devoted to the care of others? Why do we have brilliant artists and writers, chock full of emotions, determined to bring joy to their fellows? Why does night follow day?
To keep everything in balance, there always have to be opposites; light and dark, good and bad, wet and dry, etc. So just as we need the thoroughly good, decent, selfless people who are the first to appear at disaster sites and help with those in need, at the same time we need those ruthless enough to carry out those tasks that are made easier by a lack of conscience.
For instance, it’s more likely that there are a higher percentage of psychopaths within Special Forces than there are among Social Workers. However, if there are psychopaths within Special Forces, it’s certain that they’re very carefully controlled and if it’s found that they’ve become too fond of killing, then they’re politely asked to leave.
You understand my point, though. There are certain tasks within our society that can only be carried out by those fearless and dispassionate enough. In truth, it’s unlikely that a psychopath would last too long in Special Forces. Men of this calibre must act in a team and have concern for the men within that team.
Fear, too, plays its part. It stops people from doing foolish things and taking stupid risks. Members of Special Forces know how to channel their fear into intelligent action.
But it’s equally true that the cold detachment of the psychopath can have its uses.
So it’s like so much in nature. We have the good and caring on the one hand, the hard and ruthless on the other
